Laboratory animals were placed for several days in a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere enriched with superoxide O2 • -. Within minutes, the animals became more active. After a couple of days, signs of stimulation of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland – the endocrine gland, associated with the hypothalamus by a multitude of nerve and humoral connections, were found. On the contrary, the complete removal of O2 • – from ordinary atmospheric air led to the exhaustion and destruction of the structures of the pituitary and hypothalamic neurons. The processes of destruction were so significant that all experimental animals soon died. The timely addition of superoxide to the air allowed us to save the lives of animals and reverse destructive processes. These amazing results confirmed that superoxide plays a key role in the biological effects of aeroions.
An important consequence of these discoveries was the ability to use inhalation of artificial superoxide for medicinal purposes. By analogy with negative air ions, the first clinical trials of superoxide were conducted in patients with bronchial asthma. It was found that the therapeutic effect of superoxide in these patients is much more effective compared with negative air ions. Later, the therapeutic effects of superoxide were also revealed in the treatment of diseases associated with impaired brain functions. Primarily such as Parkinson’s disease, hypertension, depression, pain and migraine, the effects of stress or chronic fatigue syndrome.
